We waited by the edge of the road at a stopping place for a Colombo-bound bus to come by. None did. It seems that some of the important 'trunk' roads were impassible due to landslides and major flooding in certain cities. We were advised to take a Trinco bus in order to get back home. That didn't seem logical as it was one of very most northern places Jay had wanted to see on this mini-jaunt. We jumped off that bus at the last minute.
This monsoon was late in coming. It normally only affects the northeast area, so it understandable to see rain where we are. It's not so common for the entire island to be affected as is the case now. We got on a bus destined for Valaichchenai. As long as we were in the area, we resolved to peek at the beaches of Kalkudah and Passikudah. I'm glad we caught a big, old bus. All the lagoons had flooded sections of the road within minutes of our departure. Our bus lumbered through water which was thigh-high on a person. It was raining cats and dogs. We took the bus right past the city to the end of its route. This brought us to the Kalkudah Road although we didn't know it at the time. The rain continued to pour down in buckets. We had tea in a shop and the owners helped us flag down a tuk-tuck. It was still raining. He brought us to the Simla Inn which we found reasonable and, consequently, where I'm writing from. There are no shops around, so we had lunch at the Inn and have our dinner on order for room delivery at 8:00 pm. Incidentally, it is raining.
In summary, it's been very, very wet. I hear a happy bunch of frogs. This unplanned and unusual day has been memorable so I'm happy too although not an amphibian.
