Today, we visited the area of the Talaimannar Pier. Being predominately Christian, the fishermen do not go out on Sundays. So it was a rather slow and relaxing day. We took a morning bus from Mannar. The action spot might have been the village of Pesalai as lots of rural folks apparently went to town to do shopping at the market.
The Sri Lankan Navy gives tours of some of the remaining sand banks of ancient "Adam's Bridge" but at the impossible timings of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm at present. Perhaps, it depends on the tides. The young military guys always want to talk with Jay after they find out he speaks Sinhala. I expect that some of the days are a little boring.
In the photo you can see the actual pier where ferries used to run scheduled service to Rameswaram, in Tamil Nadu, India. I don't think one has run for more than a few months in the last thirty years. In the whole scheme of things that's rather small potatoes, especially compared to 600 or 700 years ago when one could still walk the 30 or so miles as a land bridge.
