Today, we retraced the same route over the causeways to the Navy port as we did several days ago This time, we took their free daily boat to Delft Island. The name was from the Dutch. Of course, the Portuguese were here before and the British followed more recently. This is the last inhabited island of the Jaffna peninsular.
We rented a tuk-tuk and driver to see the must-see sights. These included the, now wild, ponies which were bred by the Dutch in stables there. In addition we saw an enormous baobab tree from Africa once planted by Arab traders to feed their camels although the beasts no longer exist here. There are about 8 points of interest for those who make it to the island. It was a long day because of the bus ride of an hour and a half and the boat trip of an hour. By the end of the return trip it was getting dark.
I feel as though today involved things that not many world travelers have seen.
