We got going early, especially as some neighbour near last night's hotel had a speaker system that could be heard for a mile and played it from four in the morning. We caught a tuk-tuk to our new hotel room, left the bags in our new room, and walked to the main road for a breakfast of string hoppers.
We returned to the hotel, but had walked back to the government bus station by eight o'clock. The news was that the next bus to Kurikadduwan would leave at 8:30 but by 8:40 we were informed it'd broken down. Actually the system of private buses provide excellent alternative service so we were aboard a 9:00 one. It did have a tire changed while on the way but that only took 10 minutes.
The road out to the port where the boats shuttle to Nagadeepa is somewhat amazing as well as in amazingly poor condition. It consists of a number of narrow causeways linking islands. The total distance is about 24K but it took an hour and a half. Of course the bus stopped at a lot of small communities which exist along the way. During the trip, when looking out the window, I could've sworn we were on a small ship.
When every bus gets to the launching area, there's a boat ready. Passengers had to wear life jackets. I estimate that each boat could probably take just 25 pax. The crossing took 20 minutes and was a little rougher on the return.
We walked leisurely on the close side of the island.
We were back in town for lunch at a little after two. We have more things we want to see as long as we're this far north, so we will most likely stay a few more night.
