In fact, the Net is a major reason for the increasing speed at which news and ideas travel around the globe today. That means it's comforting when finding anything lasting that can be viewed in a browser window. I remembered 'Gender Genie' and found that it's still online. In fact the last time I mentioned it in this blog was on October 31, 2003.
It is a project which takes written text and tries to identify the author's sex by analyzing word choice and usage. I found the idea interesting, perhaps only because I teach English. Back all those years ago, I had never really considered potential gender differences in writing.
After discovering it is still online, I ran through an entry from a week ago. I knew the topic sounded masculine but I had no idea of what Gender Genie would discover about the text. I also knew it is a little short for the algorithm to make an trustworthy prediction.
Try copying and pasting some text you've created into the empty box of Gender Genie to see if you write like a boy or a girl.
