I know that older refrigerators are energy 'hogs'. I have no way to assess how much the fridge contributes to the electricity bills though. I am aware that we'd probably save a lot of money by buying a new Energy Star model. The savings on power could be substantial and therefore we'd make back the expenditure for a new refrigerator relatively quickly. I think, dollar for dollar appliances are really quite a deal nowadays as prices haven't really kept up with general inflation.
Yet, it's hard to throw away something that is working perfectly fine. The material and labour inputs of manufacturing, assembling, and transporting such a large appliance cannot be small. Avoiding the need for an unnecessary purchase seems green. Saving on monthly electricity costs also sounds green. Hum. Quandary.
