Next Weekend is a Long One

It sneaked up without much planning on our part. In Canada, Good Friday, April 2nd, is a holiday. I am also off on Easter Monday as well, but Jay isn't. I don't want to waste the time off and think we should do something during our three free days.

There should be a lot of people planning trips. Today, we wondered about spending the long weekend in the Gulf Islands. After all these years here, we've never stayed on Salt Spring Island. You know, the cost of BC Ferries has now, however, rather priced a casual trip right out of the question. The price for getting the truck and us there and back would be about $160. That is more than the hotel would cost. I cannot help but calculate that for the same amount of money I can buy three and a half tankfuls of gas. We can certainly travel in the other direction for quite some distance for the same cost.

Unfortunately, travelling east means re-tracing the same steps again and again. You can sort of see on the map what I mean. (You can zoom or move the image.) If heading east, every single trip means driving out to Hope, BC for the same 120 kilometers (80 miles). Of course, we could make a loop and come back through Whistler, BC. We've not travelled on the Sea to Sky Highway since the improvements for the Olympics have been completed.

I'm kind of itching to see the dry, semi-desert of the Okanagan Valley. But it's way too early to visit the wineries or pick peaches. Actually, I just want to head out on the highway. My poor truck has only been going 10 kilometers to BCIT and back three times a week for, what seems like, such a long time. I want to travel at highway speeds for more than a minute or two. I had to dust this picture off from a storage drive in order to find something to go along with this text. This was taken the year I got my digital camera and it was in a folder called "Trip to Lillooet - 6/2002".
