Dennis Sylvester Hurd is LinkedIn Too!

I joined LinkedIn this weekend. I had heard of the Internet site before but never much saw need for it. It's rather like a social-networking site for people with resumes. I have to admit to having one reason for looking closely at it. I had been seeing what came up when I did various Internet searches on my own name.

Let me take this chance to thank my parents for giving me such a special middle name. The Sylvester was in honour of a great-uncle who lived to be 103. As a kid, I found the wizened old man a tad frightening. Also, Dennis isn't as common a name as one might expect. The surname of Hurd isn't commonplace either. Yet sandwich the Sylvester in the middle and there's .... well ... only me! Unfortunately, I feared many people truly trying to get in contact may just type in the first and last. I found that LinkedIn came up on Google's first page with some Dennis Hurds, but that none were me.

I joined LinkedIn and let the site pull in the contents of my resume. I was impressed with what a complete job it did considering how untraditional my formatting is. Then, I thought about changing some bits of the document. As I've been at BCIT for going on 13 years, I haven't really kept it up-to-date. I have LinkedIn to thank for the removal of some dead references.


Surely, I hadn't updated my resume since this BCIT group of December 2005.
