Last night I posted this screen shot from Google Earth on Facebook. I added this challenge:
"Today we bought flights for three little trips to different cities on the coast of this large island. We will take a few days in January and then in the following month, during the part of our winter spent in Penang, Malaysia. If you like geography reply here with either name of the island. It's the third largest in the world. You could try to guess the names of the cities we're seeing, but that would be next to impossible."
There were only a couple of responses, of course. So this morning, I was able to write the following:
"Sundari wins! It is called Borneo by the Malaysians and Kalimantan by the Indonesians. The island also contains the separate country of Brunei. In January we go to Kota Kinabalu, and Bandar Seri Begawan on different trips, then to Kuching in February. These are just two to three hour flights from Penang."
Photo found on wikipedia.org/wiki/Borneo.
We also bought airplane tickets to spend a few days north of Penang on the island of Langkawi before Christmas. That flight will take only 45 minutes.
We have a number of friends who may be deciding on taking a little vacation to SE Asia this winter. Although we will be based on Penang Island during our first three months of the winter, during the following dates we will be on short trips:
Langkawi Island - December 18 to 21,It'd be fun to see if any paths can cross in those locations. After Penang, we will be heading to Siem Reap, Cambodia for a couple more months.
Kota Kinabalu - January 11 to 14,
Bandar Seri Begawan - January 20 to 23,
Kuching - February 11 to 14.
