There's a real farmer's market in Qurna that takes place every Tuesday. Our habit is to go every other week and bring back bags of vegetables. Jay turns all the produce into great meals here. Most of the things were probably picked this morning, so it'd be impossible to get fresher food. We spent perhaps the equivalent of $10 today.
Speaking of vegetable prices, we've heard that many people at home are now a bit shocked. The Canadian dollar has settled at being worth around 70 cents US. Whereas a few years ago, the northern buck was more valuable. It's all due to declining world prices for oil; the value of the Canadian dollar is tied to commodities and moves with the price of oil.
The food we brought back today would have probably cost $50 or $60 last summer at home. I cannot guess now how much that might be today with California produce coming across the border at such a premium.
