Last week when I was buying some beer at the shop, I spotted these little bottles labeled araki.
At first I thought it may be the type of distilled liquor called arrack common in south and southeast Asia. That is most commonly produced from coconuts and generally brown in colour. I always bring home at least one bottle when returning from a trip to Sri Lanka. That is not what I bought.
This bottle is a colorless, unsweetened anise-flavored distilled alcoholic drink. It cost around $US 2.50. It seemed a little familiar from years ago. I guess it is common in northern Middle East countries and is a lot like Greek ouzo. As soon as cold water is added it turns milky white. It's drunk cold with ice in little cups. I am finding the licorice flavour rather nice and will surely pick up another bottle or two.
I am not sure why it's called tiger brand; I don't think cats would like it.
